     Seiring dengan kemajuan ilmu pengetahuan, sejumlah fenomena alam mulai bisa dijelaskan termasuk fenomena pelangi. Pelangi biasanya muncul setelah hujan, ketika gerimis halus dan terdapat cahaya matahari. Cahaya matahari merupakan cahaya polikromatik yang berupa gabungan dari beberapa cahaya dengan panjang gelombang yang berbeda-beda. Ketika cahaya matahari mengenai butiran-butiran air, cahaya matahari akan terurai atau terdispersi menjadi sejumlah cahaya berwarna-warni, mirip seperti ketika cahaya polikromatik mengenai sebuah prisma dan yang bertindak sebagai prisma dalam pelangi adalah butiran-butiran air. Mata manusia mampu menangkap cahaya pada daerah panjang gelombang cahaya tampak, oleh karena itu mampu melihat setiap warna dari pelangi.

     Mungkin muncul pertanyaan kenapa urutan warna pelangi dari paling luar ke paling dalam selalu merah, jingga, kuning, hijau, biru, nila, dan ungu? Hal ini terkait energi dari setiap cahaya berbeda. Cahaya merah memiliki energi yang paling kecil sehingga didispersikan paling besar akibatnya berada di lingkaran paling luar. Sebaliknya cahaya ungu memiliki energi paling besar sehingga didispersikan paling kecil, akibatnya berada di lingkaran paling dalam pada pelangi.
